Bassa Murgia - Valle d'Itria: Gioia del Colle Dop

A full 16 communes produce Gioia del Colle DOP wine, including of course Gioa del Colle itself, all located in the province of Bari, mainly in the area’s hills. The denominated area is characterised by the classic terra rossa, reddish soils derived from the dissolution of limestone rock. These soils, clay or silt-clay, are rich in pebble-gravel content, as high as 60% of total component material. Vineyard elevations range between 200-450 metres, and slope inclinations are slight. The climate is hot-arid, with quite variable rainfall; amounts, varying with the season, average from 800 to 400mm, with 70% occurring in autumn-winter, and it is not unusual for summers to be entirely rain-free. Average temperatures rarely exceed 30C° or dip below 0C°. The red (rosso) and rosé (rosato) wine categories primarily utilise Primitivo, followed by Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Negroamaro, and other grapes much less frequently. If the grape variety is specified on the wine label, then 100% of the wine must be Primitivo and 85% Aleatico, the latter being the only grape used for sweet and fortified liquoroso wines. The white (bianco) category must contain 50-70% Trebbiano. The DOP’s most important category is without a doubt Primitivo Rosso, since the growing area’s soils and weather conditions yield wines of extreme elegance, cellarability, and intensity, a wine type that is increasingly prized by critics and consumers alike.

Categories: Rosso (red), Bianco (white), Rosato (rosé), Riserva (reserve), Dolce (sweet dessert), Liquoroso (fortified)
