Daunia

The wine and food traditions of this territory create a kaleidoscope of flavours, due to its varied landscape of mountains, forests and fertile plains of wheat-fields and vineyards. Typical foods include asparagus and wild vegetables, top-class traditional hams and some long-established Dop wines. These include Puglia’s oldest label, San Severo, and the intriguing Cacc’e mmitte di Lucera, which owes its name to the wine-makers’ of the past, who shared the same tanks to produce grape must, “taking out and putting in” their own grapes. There is plenty to see when it comes to culture, with majestic fortresses, noble residences, and imposing masseria farmsteads, relics of the old practice of moving animals between summer and winter pastures, not to mention enchanting mediaeval towns with their labyrinth of caves used for aging excellent wines.

 

Don’t miss:

  • a stroll around Lucera’s old town; the Romanesque Cathedral and Frederick II’s Castle
  • Fucacoste e cocce priatorije, The Night of the Bonfire and Heads of Purgatory, an atmospheric festival on 1 November at Orsara di Puglia
  • visit to Bovino, one of Italy’s loveliest Towns (Borghi più belli d’Italia), and its Duke’s Castle

What to try::

  • excellent sparkling wine produced from indigenous grapes using the classical Champagne method and stored in magical caves in San Severo’s old town
  • cookery classes with the country chef at Orsara di Puglia
  • guided tour of a farm specialised in breeding Black Pigs and in traditional production of the celebrated Faeto ham
  • wines and olive oils in the territory’s wineries and olive oil presses
