Alta Murgia, the king’s land among the Nero di Troia vineyards

Alta Murgia

Wild greens and dry-stone walls accompany your visit to this territory with its great farming tradition. Travel along the old drovers’ roads where you can still see the remains of the so-called jazzi, open-air sheep pens providing a temporary shelter along the route. The High Murgia area offers an ample and varied range of agri-food products for you to taste: distintive wines and extra virgin olive oils, exquisite dairy products and cheeses (a legacy of the drovers), delicious wild vegetables, juicy and sweet-smelling fruits. A priceless heritage, like the famous Castel del Monte, a Unesco site , keeping watch over the Nero di Troia vineyards from the hills above.

Don’t miss:

  • a stroll through the maze of streets known as the scesciola, Minervino Murge’s old town
  • the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sabato and the Cave of San Michele
  • a stroll through Andria’s old town and a visit to its Cathedral
  • a guided tour of Castel del Monte

What to try:

  • discover the seasonal vegetables and wild herbs of the Murgia at Montegrosso in the kitchen garden of a country chef
  • see how they make the famous burrata
  • try the classic tenerelli and visit the Museo del Confetto (Sugared Almond Museum)
  • wines and olive oils in the territory’s wineries and olive oil presses
